Ian Swales was declared the first ever Liberal Democrat MP for Redcar early on Friday 7th May. Ian overturned Labour MP Vera Baird's 12,116 majority with a huge swing of 21.8%. This was England's largest swing and the largest swing between any of the three largest parties at the 2010 general election.

Documents have been released that showed Labour ministers were formally warned about the need for the military to have an alternative to the Snatch Land Rover in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Iraq enquiry heard this from the then -Chief of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Sir Nicholas Houghton.

The coalition has only been in power for 10 weeks, but despite this short amount of time many Liberal Democrat manifesto pledges have been implemented or are due to be implemented. Only by the Liberal Democrats forming part of the coalition have these been made possible.

Redcar MP Ian Swales is determined to show that there is a way of raising money whilst dealing with the deficit by pressing the government to introduce a tax on the country's bankers, which would potentially provide billions of pounds to tackle poverty and climate change in the UK and abroad, according to Ian, who has called for the introduction of a financial transaction tax.
